Hay fever Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is hay fever?

Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, occurs when a child’s immune system overreacts to environmental allergens like pollen, dust mites, pet dander, or mould. While not life-threatening, it can disrupt sleep, concentration, and daily life.

What causes hay fever?

The condition is often triggered by allergens such as pollen (seasonal hay fever), dust mites, pet dander, mould, or other environmental irritants (perennial hay fever). Children with a family history of allergies or asthma are at a higher risk of developing hay fever.

What are the symptoms of hay fever?

  • Sneezing
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Itchy eyes, nose, or throat
  • Watery eyes
  • Fatigue due to disturbed sleep

How is hay fever in children treated?

  • Avoidance of triggers: Use air purifiers, clean frequently, and limit outdoor activities when pollen counts are high.
  • Medications: (to reduce allergic reactions), nasal corticosteroids (to reduce inflammation), and decongestants (to relieve nasal congestion).
  • Immunotherapy: Allergy shots or sublingual tablets for severe cases.

With proper management, most children with hay fever can lead active, healthy lives. If you notice symptoms of hay fever in your child, [contact us at Kidswell Health]. We can help identify triggers, recommend appropriate treatments, and ensure your child’s symptoms are well-controlled.
