Chickenpox Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is chickenpox?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It primarily affects children under the age of 12 and is easily spread through coughing, sneezing, or direct contact with fluid from the characteristic blisters. While chickenpox is usually mild, it can lead to complications in infants, teenagers, and those with weakened immune systems.

What are the symptoms of chickenpox?

Chickenpox often starts with flu-like symptoms and progresses to the telltale itchy rash.

Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue and loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • An itchy rash that develops into fluid-filled blisters, spreading from the face and chest to the rest of the body
  • Blisters that burst, scab over, and heal over 7–10 days

Seek urgent medical attention if your child experiences:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Persistent high fever
  • Signs of secondary infection, such as redness, swelling, or pain around the blisters

How is chickenpox treated?

Chickenpox typically resolves on its own, but treatment focuses on relieving symptoms and preventing complications:

  • Itch Relief: Use calamine lotion, cool baths with baking soda or oatmeal, and antihistamines to soothe itching. Trim your child’s nails to prevent scratching and infection.
  • Fever Management: Paracetamol can reduce fever and discomfort. Avoid aspirin, as it is linked to Reye’s syndrome, a serious condition.
  • Hydration and Rest: Encourage plenty of fluids and ensure your child gets adequate rest.

In cases of secondary bacterial infection, antibiotics may be required. If your child develops additional symptoms or has a weakened immune system, please get in touch with us at Kidswell health.
