Colic Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is colic?

Colic is a common condition in infants, characterised by intense crying or fussiness without any apparent cause. It often begins around 2–3 weeks of age, peaks at 6–8 weeks, and resolves by 3–4 months. While colic can be distressing for both babies and parents, it is not harmful and doesn’t indicate illness.

What are the symptoms of colic?

  • Prolonged crying episodes, often in the late afternoon or evening
  • Fussiness that is difficult to soothe
  • Clenched fists, arched back, or tensed abdominal muscles
  • Passing gas, which may provide temporary relief

How to help your baby with colic:

While there’s no definitive cure for colic, several strategies may help:

  • Comforting Techniques: Holding, rocking, or wearing your baby in a carrier can provide comfort. White noise or soft music may also help soothe your baby.
  • Feeding Adjustments: Breastfeeding parents might consider dietary changes to eliminate potential irritants like dairy. For formula-fed babies, consult your paediatrician about switching formulas.
  • Gas Relief: Burping your baby during feeds and providing supervised tummy time can reduce gas and discomfort. Simeticone (antiflatulent) drops or gripe water may also help.
  • Calm Environment: Minimising overstimulation with dim lighting and reduced noise can ease symptoms.
