CMPA Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is cow’s milk protein allergy (CMPA)?

Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy (CMPA), also known as Cow’s Milk Allergy (CMA), is an immune or digestive system reaction to proteins found in cow’s milk. It is most common in infants and young children, particularly those under one year old. CMPA can occur in formula-fed babies or through exposure to cow’s milk proteins via breastmilk. While some children experience mild digestive discomfort, others may have more severe allergic reactions.

What are the symptoms of CMPA?

  • Digestive issues (diarrhoea, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain)
  • Skin reactions (eczema, rashes)
  • Respiratory symptoms (wheezing, congestion, runny nose)
  • Blood or mucus in the stool
  • Poor weight gain or failure to thrive

How is CMPA managed?

  • Dietary Changes: If formula-fed, your doctor may recommend switching to a hypoallergenic or extensively hydrolysed formula. Breastfeeding mothers may need to eliminate dairy from their diets.
  • Symptom Monitoring: Keeping a food and symptom diary can help track reactions and identify triggers.
  • Reintroduction & Long-Term Outlook: Most children outgrow CMPA by the age of three. Gradual reintroduction under medical guidance helps determine when it’s safe to resume dairy.
