Ear Infection Treatment for Children

What is an ear infection?

An ear infection occurs when bacteria or viruses cause inflammation in the ear. In children, ear infections are common and can affect different parts of the ear:

• Otitis Media (Middle Ear Infection): This happens when fluid builds up behind the eardrum, often following a cold or respiratory infection.
• Otitis Externa (Swimmer’s Ear): This affects the outer ear canal, usually due to trapped water, debris, or irritation.

How is an ear infection treated?

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the infection:

• Middle ear infections may resolve on their own, but some cases require antibiotics. Pain relief with paracetamol or ibuprofen can help.
• Swimmer’s ear is usually treated with medicated ear drops and by keeping the ear dry. To prevent swimmer’s ear, dry your child’s ears thoroughly after swimming or bathing and avoid inserting objects like cotton swabs into the ear. 

If your child experiences persistent pain, high fever, or worsening symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended.
