Growing Pains Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What are growing pains?

Growing pains are a common and normal part of childhood, typically affecting children between the ages of 3 and 12. These pains are not caused by injury or illness but are thought to be linked to rapid physical growth. Growing pains most commonly occur in the muscles of the legs, especially in the calves, thighs, or behind the knees. They tend to appear in the late afternoon or evening and can sometimes wake children up at night.

What are the symptoms of growing pains?

  • Aching, throbbing, or discomfort in the legs
  • Pain that occurs in both legs, rather than just one
  • Pain that often worsens after physical activity or during growth spurts
  • Symptoms that occur in the evening or at night but improve by morning
  • No swelling, redness, or limping (if these symptoms are present, they may indicate another condition)

How are growing pains managed?

  • Massage and warmth: Gently massaging the affected muscles or applying a warm compress can help soothe discomfort.
  • Stretching exercises: Gentle stretching before bed may help reduce the frequency and severity of pain.
  • Pain relief: Mild pain relievers like paracetamol (as directed by your doctor) can help ease discomfort if needed.
  • Encouraging movement: Regular physical activity, balanced with periods of rest, can help support muscle health.

How we can help

At Kidswell Health, we understand that growing pains can be distressing for both children and parents. Our paediatric team provides expert assessment to rule out other potential causes of leg pain and ensure your child’s symptoms are part of normal development. We offer personalised guidance tailored to your child’s needs, helping you manage discomfort with effective strategies. If necessary, we can conduct further assessments, such as X-rays or blood tests, to exclude other conditions and provide the best course of action for your child’s wellbeing.
