Headache & Migraine Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What are headaches & migraines in children?

Headaches are a common complaint in children and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain affecting daily activities. They may be caused by factors such as stress, dehydration, hunger, lack of sleep, or eye strain. While many headaches are tension-related and short-lived, some children experience recurring or severe migraines. Migraines can cause throbbing pain, often on one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light or sound.

What are the symptoms of headaches & migraines?

  • Tension headaches: Mild to moderate pain, often described as a tight band around the head.
  • Migraines: More intense, pounding pain, often with additional symptoms like nausea, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, and visual disturbances (aura).
  • Other symptoms: Sensitivity to light or sound, irritability, and a preference for quiet, dark environments.

How can children’s headaches and migraines be treated?

Most mild headaches improve with simple measures:

  • Ensuring proper hydration and regular meals
  • Maintaining a consistent sleep schedule
  • Managing stress through relaxation techniques
  • Using over-the-counter pain relief if recommended by a doctor

For children with migraines, identifying and avoiding potential triggers (such as certain foods, disrupted sleep, or stress) can be beneficial. In cases of frequent or severe migraines, a paediatrician may suggest preventive treatments or medication.

How we can help

At Kidswell Health, we take a comprehensive approach to assessing childhood headaches and migraines. Our paediatric specialists can help identify underlying causes, provide guidance on lifestyle adjustments, and offer personalised treatment plans to reduce headache frequency and severity.

If necessary, we may recommend further assessments, such as head imaging, to rule out other conditions and ensure your child receives the appropriate care.
