Lactose Intolerance Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is lactose intolerance?

Lactose intolerance is a condition in which the body has difficulty digesting lactose, the sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens when the body doesn’t produce enough lactase, the enzyme needed to break down lactose in the digestive system.

What are the symptoms of lactose intolerance?

Children with lactose intolerance may experience:

  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Diarrhoea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Nausea

These symptoms usually appear within 30 minutes to two hours after consuming dairy products.

How is lactose intolerance treated?

  • Reducing or eliminating lactose-containing foods.
  • Using lactose-free alternatives such as lactose-free milk and dairy products.
  • Taking lactase enzyme supplements before consuming dairy.
  • Ensuring your child receives adequate calcium and vitamin D from non-dairy sources.

How we can help

At Kidswell Health, we can help diagnose lactose intolerance through specialised tests and dietary assessments. Our paediatric team provides guidance on managing symptoms, ensuring your child receives the right nutrition, and advising on the best dietary adjustments. If needed, we can refer your child to a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
