Meningitis Treatment for Children

What is meningitis?

Meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or other microorganisms, with bacterial meningitis being the most severe.

What are the symptoms of meningitis?

  • High fever
  • Severe headache
  • Vomiting
  • Stiff neck
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Seizures (in some cases)
  • Rash (sometimes purple or red spots)
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating

How is meningitis treated?

  • Bacterial meningitis: Requires urgent hospital treatment with intravenous antibiotics.
  • Viral meningitis: Often resolves with supportive care, including fluids and pain relief.
