Nosebleed Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What are nosebleeds?

Nosebleeds (epistaxis) are common in children and can seem alarming, but they are usually harmless. They occur when small blood vessels in the nose break due to irritation, dryness, or minor trauma.

However, if a nosebleed lasts more than 20 minutes or occurs after a head injury, medical attention should be sought.

What are the causes of nosebleeds?

  • Dry air or temperature changes
  • Nose picking or rubbing
  • Allergies or colds
  • Injury to the nose
  • Underlying clotting disorders (rare)

How are nosebleeds managed?

Immediate Care:

  • Have your child sit upright and lean slightly forward.

  • Pinch the nostrils together for 5-10 minutes.

  • Apply a cold compress to the bridge of the nose.

Prevention:

  • Use a humidifier if dry air is a trigger.

  • Keep nails trimmed to prevent nose-picking.

  • Treat underlying allergies or colds.
