Sinusitis Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is sinusitis?

Sinusitis is the inflammation or infection of the sinuses, the air-filled cavities in the skull that help filter and humidify the air we breathe. It often develops after a cold or respiratory infection when the sinuses become swollen and blocked, trapping mucus and allowing bacteria or viruses to grow. This can lead to symptoms such as nasal congestion, facial pain, pressure around the eyes, and headaches. While most cases are viral and resolve on their own, bacterial sinusitis may require medical treatment.

What are the symptoms of sinusitis?

  • Runny or stuffy nose.
  • Thick yellow or green nasal discharge.
  • Coughing, especially at night.
  • Facial pain or tenderness.
  • Fever and headaches.

How is sinusitis treated?

  • Mild Cases: Supportive care, such as saline sprays, hydration, and over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Bacterial Sinusitis: May require antibiotics.
  • Chronic Cases: Specialist referral for further assessment.
