Upper Respiratory Infection (URI) Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is a URI?

An upper respiratory infection (URI) is an infection affecting the nose, throat, and sinuses. It is most commonly caused by viruses such as the common cold, flu, or COVID-19. These infections spread easily through coughing, sneezing, and direct contact, making them particularly common in children, especially during colder months. While most URIs are mild, they can sometimes lead to complications like ear infections, sinusitis, or bronchitis.

What are the symptoms of a URI?

  • Cough, congestion, and runny nose
  • Fever and sore throat
  • Sneezing, fatigue, and general discomfort
  • Watery eyes or headaches (in cases involving sinus infections)

How are URIs treated?

Most URIs are viral infections, meaning antibiotics are not needed. Instead, treatment focuses on:

  • Rest and hydration to support recovery.
  • Pain relief with child-safe medications like paracetamol or ibuprofen.
  • Saline nasal drops or humidifiers to ease congestion.
  • Warm fluids and throat lozenges (if age-appropriate) to soothe a sore throat.

If the infection is caused by bacteria (e.g., strep throat), antibiotics may be required.
