BCG (Tuberculosis) Vaccine

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Mitsu Shah, June 2025.

What is the BCG (Tuberculosis) vaccine?

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs, but it can also impact other parts of the body such as the lymph nodes, bones, and brain. TB is spread through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. While it can be treated with antibiotics, prevention through vaccination is key to controlling its spread.

The BCG vaccine (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) is one of the oldest vaccines still in use and is particularly effective in preventing severe TB in children, such as TB meningitis and miliary TB (a widespread form of the disease).

What it protects against:

The BCG vaccine helps protect against the most severe forms of tuberculosis in children.

Who it’s for:

The BCG vaccine is recommended for babies, children, and young adults who are at higher risk of TB exposure. This includes children with parents or grandparents from countries where TB is common, or those who are likely to travel to such regions.
