Chickenpox (Varicella) Vaccination

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Mitsu Shah, June 2025.

What is the chickenpox vaccination?

Chickenpox is a highly contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. While often mild in children, it can lead to complications such as skin infections, pneumonia, and, in rare cases, encephalitis. The chickenpox vaccine provides effective protection against the virus.

What it protects against:

This vaccine helps prevent chickenpox and the risk of associated complications. It can also reduce the likelihood of shingles later in life, as the same virus causes both conditions.

Who it’s for:

The vaccine is suitable for children over 12 months of age. It’s especially recommended for children who have not had chickenpox and those with weakened immune systems or chronic health conditions. It is not currently part of the NHS routine vaccination schedule but is widely used in private healthcare settings.
