COVID-19 Vaccine for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Mitsu Shah, June 2025.

What is the COVID-19 vaccine?

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. While children usually experience milder symptoms than adults, they can still catch and spread the virus, and some may experience long COVID or rare complications such as Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS-TS). Vaccination plays a key role in reducing the spread of the virus and protecting vulnerable individuals.

What it protects against:

The COVID-19 vaccine helps reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalisation, and complications from COVID-19. It also provides community-level protection by helping to limit transmission.

Who it’s for:

The COVID-19 vaccine is recommended for:

  • Children and young people aged 5 and over with certain health conditions.

  • Those who live with someone who is immunocompromised.

  • Families seeking private COVID-19 vaccinations for additional protection or international travel.

The vaccine is given as an injection, and depending on age and medical need, one or more doses may be advised.
