Flu Vaccine for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Mitsu Shah, June 2025.

What is the flu vaccine for children?

The flu vaccine protects children from seasonal influenza, a common viral infection that can cause fever, cough, body aches, and fatigue. While many children recover quickly, flu can lead to more serious complications such as pneumonia, ear infections, and worsening of chronic conditions like asthma. In some cases, flu-related complications can require hospitalisation.

What it protects against:

Each year, the flu vaccine is updated to protect against the most common strains of influenza circulating during flu season. The vaccine helps reduce the severity of illness and protects both the vaccinated child and those around them.

Who it’s for:

Children aged 2 to 17 years are eligible for the flu vaccine, which is typically given as a quick, painless nasal spray. It is especially recommended for children with underlying health conditions such as asthma or diabetes.
