Routine Childhood Vaccinations

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Mitsu Shah, June 2025.

What are routine childhood vaccinations?

Routine childhood vaccinations (immunisations) form the cornerstone of preventive healthcare. These vaccines are administered at key stages throughout childhood to build immunity and protect against serious and sometimes life-threatening illnesses. Each one plays a vital role in helping children grow up healthy and protected.

What they protect against:

Routine vaccinations protect against a wide range of diseases, including:

  • Diphtheria
  • Tetanus
  • Pertussis (Whooping Cough)
  • Polio
  • Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib)
  • Hepatitis B
  • Pneumococcal infections
  • Rotavirus
  • Meningitis B and C
  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)

Who it’s for:

These vaccinations are suitable for babies, children, and teenagers, and are administered according to the UK childhood immunisation schedule. This schedule begins at 8 weeks old and continues into adolescence, ensuring protection at the most vulnerable stages of development.

Why it matters:

Vaccines help prevent the spread of disease within the community and contribute to herd immunity. They also reduce the risk of serious complications, hospitalisations, and long-term health issues.
