Acne Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is child & adolescent acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that affects children and teenagers, caused by clogged hair follicles due to oil, bacteria, or dead skin cells. Although it’s often associated with puberty, acne can appear in younger children as well.

What are the symptoms of acne?

Acne symptoms can vary in severity but may include:

  • Blackheads and whiteheads
  • Pimples or pustules
  • Red, inflamed areas
  • Nodules or cysts in severe cases

What can cause acne in children and teenagers?

The primary causes of acne are hormonal changes, which increase oil production in the skin, and genetic factors.

Other contributing factors can include:

  • Skin care habits: Using oily or greasy products can clog pores.
  • Diet and stress: While not direct causes, they may worsen acne in some children.
  • External factors: Sweat, tight clothing, or prolonged exposure to irritants can exacerbate the condition.

How is acne treated?

Acne treatment depends on its severity:

  • Mild Acne: Over-the-counter products with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
  • Moderate Acne: Prescription retinoids or topical antibiotics.
  • Severe Acne: Oral medications like antibiotics or hormonal therapies may be recommended.

Establishing a gentle skin care routine is crucial. Encourage your child to wash their face twice daily with a mild cleanser and avoid picking or squeezing pimples, which can lead to scarring.

If acne affects your child’s self-esteem or doesn’t improve with basic treatments, consult a pediatrician or dermatologist here at Kidswell Health. Early intervention can prevent long-term skin damage and boost your child’s confidence during this important stage of development.
