This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is constipation?

Constipation occurs when bowel movements become infrequent or difficult to pass. It’s a common issue in children and can often be managed with proper care.

What are the symptoms of constipation?

  • Passing hard or dry stools
  • Straining during bowel movements
  • Stomach pain or bloating
  • Smears of stool in underwear
  • Blood in stool, which should prompt a visit to a doctor

How is constipation treated?

  • Dietary Changes: Encourage fibre-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, along with adequate hydration.
  • Routine: Establish a regular bathroom schedule, especially after meals.
  • Medications: Mild laxatives or stool softeners may be recommended by a paediatrician.
