GORD Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is Gastro-Oesophageal Reflux Disease (GORD)?

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) occurs when stomach contents flow back into the oesophagus, causing discomfort commonly referred to as “heartburn.” GORD is common in infants and young children as their digestive systems are still developing. While mild reflux is normal in babies, persistent symptoms may require medical evaluation. Older children and teenagers may also experience reflux, often triggered by certain foods or lifestyle factors.

What are the symptoms of GORD?

GORD symptoms vary depending on age:

  • Infants: Frequent spitting up, irritability during or after feeds, arching of the back, difficulty gaining weight.
  • Older children and teens: Heartburn, chest discomfort, a sour taste in the mouth, nausea, difficulty swallowing, or excessive burping.

How is GORD managed?

Many cases of infant reflux improve with time, but for persistent symptoms, management may include:

  • Feeding adjustments: Smaller, more frequent feeds, keeping the baby upright after feeding, and ensuring a good latch if breastfeeding.
  • Dietary changes: Older children may benefit from avoiding trigger foods such as spicy, acidic, or fatty foods, and eating smaller meals.
  • Medications: In cases where lifestyle changes aren’t enough, doctors may prescribe acid-reducing medications.
