Head Lice Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is head lice?

Head lice are tiny parasitic insects that live on the scalp and feed on human blood. They are very common in children, particularly in school and nursery settings where close contact allows them to spread easily. While head lice do not carry diseases, they can cause intense itching and discomfort.

How do children catch head lice?

Head lice spread through direct head-to-head contact, which is the most common way they are passed between children. This often happens during play, at school, nursery, sleepovers, or when children sit closely together. Despite common misconceptions, Lice cannot jump or fly – they crawl from one head to another. They can also spread through shared items like hair brushes, hats, pillows, or headphones, though this is less common. Lice thrive on the scalp but do not survive for long on surfaces or clothing.

What are the symptoms of head lice?

  • Persistent itching of the scalp, often behind the ears or at the nape of the neck
  • Visible lice or their eggs (nits) attached to hair shafts
  • A crawling sensation on the scalp
  • Small red bumps or sores from scratching
  • Difficulty sleeping due to increased itchiness at night

How is head lice treated?

  • Medicated shampoos and lotions: Special over-the-counter or prescription treatments help kill lice and nits.
  • Wet combing: Using a fine-toothed nit comb on damp hair can help remove lice and eggs.
  • Washing bedding and clothing: Lice cannot survive long without a human host, but washing items in hot water can help prevent reinfestation.
  • Avoiding re-exposure: Encourage children not to share hair accessories, brushes, or hats.
