Treatment for Injuries in Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is an injury?

Injuries in children are very common, often resulting from their active and curious nature. While most are minor and heal quickly, some injuries require prompt medical attention.

What are the symptoms of injuries?

The symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of the injury:

  • Burns: Redness, blistering, swelling, or white/charred skin.
  • Cuts and Grazes: Bleeding, redness, pain, and potential risk of infection.
  • Fractures: Intense pain, swelling, bruising, difficulty moving the affected area, or deformity.
  • Sprains and Strains: Pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty moving the affected joint or muscle.

How are injuries treated?

  • Burns: Cool the affected area with running water for 10–15 minutes, cover with a clean dressing, and seek medical help for larger burns or burns on sensitive areas.
  • Cuts and Grazes: Clean the wound with water, apply pressure to stop bleeding, and cover with a bandage. Deep cuts may require stitches.
  • Fractures: Immobilize the area, seek medical attention, and use an X-ray to confirm the diagnosis. Treatment may include a cast, splint, or surgery in severe cases.
  • Sprains and Strains: Use the R.I.C.E. method: Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Severe cases may require medical evaluation.
