Jaundice Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is jaundice?

Jaundice is a condition where a baby’s skin and the whites of their eyes appear yellow. It occurs when there is a buildup of bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when the body breaks down red blood cells. This is common in newborns because their livers are not yet developed enough to break down the bilirubin.

What are the symptoms of jaundice?

  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes
  • Sleepiness
  • Poor feeding or difficulty latching
  • Dark urine and pale stools (in severe cases)

How is jaundice treated?

  • Mild cases usually resolve on their own with frequent feeding and natural light exposure.
  • Severe cases may require phototherapy (light treatment) to break down excess bilirubin.
  • In rare cases, a baby may need a hospital stay for further monitoring and treatment.

How we can help

The Kidswell Health team offers expert assessment and monitoring of jaundice in newborns. We provide bilirubin level testing, personalised feeding advice, and referrals to hospital care if needed. Our paediatricians can also support parents in understanding and managing jaundice safely at home.
