Menstrual Cycle Concerns

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is a menstrual cycle concern?

For many girls, the onset of menstruation, or a “period,” is a significant milestone in their development. However, it’s common for girls and adolescents to experience various concerns related to their menstrual cycle. These concerns may include irregular periods, heavy bleeding, pain, or missed periods. While some fluctuations in the menstrual cycle are normal, persistent or severe issues may require medical attention.

What are the symptoms of menstrual cycle concerns?

  • Irregular periods (long cycles, skipped periods, or unpredictable cycles)
  • Painful cramps (dysmenorrhea) ranging from mild to severe
  • Heavy bleeding (menorrhagia) that affects daily activities
  • Missed periods due to stress, significant weight changes, or underlying health conditions
  • Fatigue or hormonal symptoms such as mood changes and headaches

How are menstrual cycle concerns treated?

  • Lifestyle Adjustments: Ensuring a healthy diet, exercise, and stress management can help regulate cycles.
  • Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relief (as advised by a doctor) can help with cramps.
  • Hormonal Treatment: Birth control pills or hormonal therapy may be recommended for those with severe irregularities.
  • Medical Evaluation: Blood tests or ultrasounds may be needed to rule out underlying conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid issues.
