Mononucleosis (Mono) Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is mononucleosis?

Mononucleosis, commonly known as “mono”, “glandular fever” or “the kissing disease,” is an infectious disease caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It is most common in adolescents and young adults but can affect children as well. Mono is typically spread through saliva but can also be transmitted via coughing, sneezing, or shared personal items.

What are the symptoms of mononucleosis?

  • Severe fatigue
  • Sore throat (sometimes severe)
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever
  • Headache and muscle aches
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Abdominal discomfort due to liver or spleen swelling

How is mononucleosis diagnosed and treated?

  • Diagnosis: A healthcare provider may perform a blood test (monospot or EBV-specific tests) to confirm the infection.
  • Treatment: There is no specific antiviral treatment for mono. Management focuses on supportive care, including:
    • Plenty of rest
    • Staying hydrated
    • Over-the-counter pain relievers for fever and sore throat
    • Avoiding contact sports if the spleen is enlarged
