What is a lower respiratory tract infection?

A lower respiratory tract infection, often known as pneumonia or a chest infection, affects the lungs and can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or, in rare cases, fungi. The severity can vary from mild to severe.

What are the symptoms of a lower respiratory tract infection?

  • Persistent cough
  • Fever
  • Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Loss of appetite and fatigue
  • Wheezing or crackling sounds when breathing

How is a lower respiratory tract infection treated?

  • Mild cases: Supportive care, including fluids, rest, and fever management.
