Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) Treatment for Children

This page has been medically reviewed by Dr Gabriel Chain, March 2025.

What is a UTI?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system, leading to pain and discomfort. UTIs are more common in girls due to the shorter urethra but can affect boys as well. If left untreated, they can spread to the kidneys, causing more serious health issues.

What are the symptoms of a UTI?

  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate
  • Cloudy, dark, or foul-smelling urine
  • Fever, abdominal or lower back pain
  • Irritability or poor feeding (in younger children)

How are UTIs treated?

  • Mild UTIs: Treated with a course of antibiotics to clear the infection.
  • Severe or recurrent UTIs: May require further tests, such as urine cultures or imaging, to check for underlying issues like kidney reflux.

Encouraging good hygiene, proper hydration, and frequent urination can help prevent UTIs.
