Having a blood test can feel daunting for children (and their parents), but with preparation and support, it can be a calm, positive experience.

This guide explains how to:

  • Prepare your child for their blood test
  • Understand what will happen during the appointment
  • Know what to expect afterwards

At Kidswell Health, our team has extensive experience supporting children through medical procedures and we’ll do everything possible to make your visit stress-free.

Before your child’s blood test

Talk honestly and simply

  • Use age-appropriate language to explain what will happen.
  • Be honest: let your child know it may feel like a quick pinch or sting, but it will be over quickly.

Choose easy clothing

  • Dress your child in short sleeves or a loose top so sleeves can easily roll up.

Keep your child hydrated

  • Encourage plenty of fluids beforehand. This makes veins easier to see and reduces the risk of dizziness.
  • If fasting is required (we’ll tell you), only water is allowed.

Keep them warm

  • Warmth helps veins become visible and easier to access.

Bring comfort items or distractions

  • We provide books, toys, a TV, and Rubik’s cubes, but feel free to bring your child’s favourite toy or comfort item.

Pack a snack and drink

  • A snack can help your child recover quickly, especially after fasting.
  • Sugary snacks can give a quick energy boost and ease dizziness.

Plan a reward

  • A special treat or fun activity afterwards can motivate and reassure your child.

What to expect during the blood test

A calm, supportive environment

  • You’re encouraged to stay close to your child to provide comfort.

Comfortable positioning

  • Your child may sit on your lap, hold your hand, or choose another position that feels safe.
  • Staff may suggest gentle holds to keep your child comfortable and still.

Extra support if needed

  • An extra team member may assist to ensure your child is safe and calm.

How much blood is taken

  • The amount depends on your doctor’s request.

Pain relief options

We offer:

  • Numbing cream (takes 20 minutes to work)
  • Freeze spray (instant relief)
  • Buzzy® device (vibration and cooling wings for distraction)

Tourniquet use

  • A soft band is placed on your child’s arm to help find a vein and make the blood draw easier.

Paediatric-sized needles

  • We use the smallest suitable needles, tailored to your child’s age, size, and veins.

After the blood test

  • Offer praise and reassurance: Celebrate your child’s bravery.
  • Provide a snack and drink: Helps energy levels recover, especially if they were fasting.
  • Plaster care: Leave the plaster on for 5–10 minutes; check for swelling or bleeding once removed.
  • Stickers and small rewards: Children receive a bravery sticker.
  • Results: Most results are back in a few days, but timing varies depending on the tests. We’ll contact you as soon as all the results are ready.

Please note:

If your child feels faint: We’ll lay them down, cool the room, and give water until they’re comfortable.

Multiple attempts: We aim for one attempt. If it isn’t successful, we’ll discuss next steps and prioritise your child’s well-being.

FAQs

How long will the appointment take?
Around 20–30 minutes, and if numbing cream is used, we advise you allow for 45-60 minutes.

Can I stay with my child?
Yes, we encourage parents or carers to stay close. We have a quiet and comfortable waiting area, as well as a great coffee and tea selection!

Do I need a referral?
We accept referrals but also take direct bookings. If it’s a request from another doctor please send us the ‘blood request’ form at the time of booking

What if my child has needle anxiety?
Please let us know in advance, we can allow extra time and provide extra support. Our Psychological Health team is always on hand to provide support, and in some situations — with advance notice — we can offer gas & air to help your child feel more relaxed during the procedure. Please speak to our team if you think this may be helpful, and we’ll guide you through the options.

When will I get the results?
Timing varies by test, but most results are back from our laboratory within a few days. We’ll contact you as soon as they’re ready.
